What to Do When You Miss a Week at the Gym

Published May 17, 2026

It happens to everyone. A work deadline, a vacation, being sick, or just losing momentum for a week. You missed the gym. Now what?

First, it doesn't matter as much as you think

One week off does not undo your progress. Your muscles do not disappear in seven days. Your cardiovascular fitness barely changes. What changes is your rhythm, and rhythm is recoverable. The worst thing you can do after missing a week is treat it like a catastrophe and quit.

Do not try to make up for lost time

Coming back after a break and doubling your volume to "catch up" is how people get injured and end up taking another two weeks off. Come back at the same weight and intensity you were at before. Your first session back might feel harder than usual. That's normal. It passes quickly.

Just start again. Today.

The longer you wait after breaking a streak, the harder it gets to restart. The gap between your last workout and your next one is already there. The goal now is to make it stop growing. One session, done at whatever intensity you can manage, resets your momentum.

Figure out what caused the break

If life got in the way, that's normal and you move on. If you burned out, that's a signal your program was too aggressive and you should dial it back. If you just lost motivation, that's a sign your workouts might need to be shorter, simpler, or scheduled at a different time. Missing a week is useful data if you use it.

Liftaroo picks up where you left off

When you come back to Liftaroo after time away, your program is still there. Your history is still there. You don't have to rebuild anything. Open the app and start the next workout. That's the only step.
