Stretch, Dumbass: 10 Minutes in Front of the TV. That's It.

Published April 17, 2026

You're going to watch TV tonight. Probably for at least an hour, maybe two. You're going to sit on the couch, scroll your phone at the same time, and wonder why your hips are so tight and your hamstrings feel like guitar strings. Meanwhile, the floor is right there.

I'm not asking you to become a yoga person. I'm asking you to get on the floor for 10 minutes while you watch your show. That's it.

You Used to Be Flexible

When you were a kid, you could sit cross-legged on the floor for hours. You could squat all the way down without thinking about it. You could touch your toes. What happened? You spent 20 years sitting in chairs, and your body adapted to that position instead.

Tight hip flexors, tight hamstrings, rounded shoulders, stiff ankles. These aren't just aging. They're the result of never moving through your full range of motion. And they're all fixable. It just takes consistency, not intensity.

The 10-Minute Floor Routine

Here's what I do almost every night. Sit on the floor in front of the TV. Spend 2 minutes in a deep squat hold, or as deep as you can go. Spend 2 minutes in a pigeon stretch, each side. Spend 2 minutes reaching for your toes with straight legs. Spend 2 minutes in a couch stretch for your hip flexors. Done. Ten minutes. You didn't even miss any of your show.

You don't need a yoga mat. You don't need special clothes. You don't need a 45-minute guided session. Just get on the floor and hold some positions while you watch whatever you're already watching.

Why This Matters More After 30

In your 20s, you can get away with never stretching. Your body is resilient and forgiving. After 30, and especially after 35, the bill comes due. You wake up stiff. Your lower back aches for no reason. You pull something doing a movement that used to be easy. Your body is telling you it needs maintenance, and stretching is the cheapest maintenance there is.

I'm almost 40. If I skip stretching for a week, I feel it. My squats suffer, my hips feel locked up, and my lower back starts complaining. When I'm consistent with even 10 minutes a night, everything works better.

Consistency Beats Intensity

You don't need to do the splits. You don't need to hold a stretch until it hurts. Mild discomfort, held for 60-90 seconds, repeated regularly. That's what changes your flexibility over time. One brutal stretching session won't do anything. Ten minutes every night for a month will change your life.

Just Get on the Floor

Tonight, when you sit down to watch something, sit on the floor instead of the couch. Just that one change. Start moving around while you're down there. Stretch whatever feels tight. You'll be amazed how much better you feel in the morning.

Ten minutes. You're already watching TV anyway. Stretch, dumbass.
